Rock formations, ancient artifacts, fossils, eroding Mexican walls, the rich colors and textures of the earth are all sources of inspiration. My pieces are sometimes mistaken for clay or stone since I try to achieve the textural effects of weathering on exposed, disintegrating surfaces. Often they have the look of something that has been unearthed after a long period of time.
Working with paper is meditative and slow, allowing time to explore the material and to be intuitive about the forms that result. My work is made from a pulp of cotton linters. The beaten pulp is pigmented, and then cast onto textural found objects using a deckle and mold. Sometimes clay shards or twigs are imbedded at this time. After being pressed, dried and then painted with acrylics, the finished pieces are sealed and mounted on stretched canvasses.
